Sickness Update

Well, we made it through last week, after Dex was diagnosed with Croup.  He had a ROUGH few days, but seemed much better on Thursday afternoon and Friday (meaning, he didn't cry when you put him down).  This weekend, Pop & Emi came into town for Amanda's birthday, and Dex seeemed okay on Saturday, but woah, Saturday night, he had to be held the entire night (thank you, Emi) and would wake up almost every hour crying.  He was severely congested and running a fever.  He couldn't breathe through his nose, which didn't work very well since he sucks his thumb to sleep.  I think that woke him up several times, in and of itself.  We gave him tylenol and a decongestant throughout the night, but nothing really seemed to give him much relief.  So, we took him to Cook's Urgent Care this morning, and come to find out...he now has bronchiolitis.  This is caused by several different viruses (including RSV) that infects the small airways of the lungs.  (Did that sound like I copied it from the doctor's hand-out?  Because I did.) 

So.....even after taking Dex to get a monthly RSV prevention shot for the last 7 months (which are terrible, by the way...huge needles, thick serum that really burns going in, and the fact that he had to break his shot into two shots, one in each leg, since his weight was under 20 pounds) he still managed to catch the virus and cause bronchilolitis.  *sigh*  I just feel terrible for the kid, because watching a sick baby, unable to help him, just breaks my heart.

We were perscribed a nebulizer and some albuterol today to give him as needed, which seems to help quite a bit, thankfully.  He was able to nap today and is sleeping on his own right now, so that's encouraging.
